14 students from Pete Guthrie's Design and Production Technology class at the Academies participated in a cross-curricular activity involving colorizing electron micrographs from the schools SEM. Students brought in their own samples, prepared and imaged them using the NSIL's SEM. They then learned the principles of photoshop and colorized their micrographs.
The images were submitted to the 2013 FEI Company image contest. FEI was so impressed with the submissions that they sent each student a T-shirt with a print of the image they submitted to the contest on it. Some of the student images were also selected to be in the National Geographic film "Mysteries of the Unseen World", which will be shown in museums throught the country begining in the summer of 2014.
