The Bergen County Academies has grown in incremental steps into its current state over the course of the past 20+ years. With each of those changes, the school has looked to the future, and from that, BCA Research developed. Here is a brief history of the growth of the program. 


  • 1952 - The Hackensack, NJ campus opened as the Bergen County Vocational - Technical High School. 

  • 1992 - The Bergen County Technical Schools officially opened its first Academy on the Hackensack campus, the Academy for the Advancement of Science and Technology (AAST). 

  • 1990's-2000's - Additional Academies were added, eventually reaching its current design with 7 in-house focused academic programs.

    • The Academy for the Advancement of Science and Technology (AAST), The Academy for Medical Science Technology (AMST), The Academy for Engineering and Design Technology (AEDT), The Academy for Technology and Computer Science (ATCS), The Academy for Business and Finance (ABF), The Academy for Visual and Performing Arts (AVPA), and The Academy for Culinary Arts and Hospitality Administration (ACAHA). 

  • September 2004 - The BCA Research Cell Biology Lab opened.

  • September 2006 - The BCA Research Stem Cell Lab opened.

  • May 2007 - The BCA Research Cryo and Refrigerated Storage Facility opened.

  • May 2008 - The BCA Research Nano-Structural Imaging Lab opened.

  • September 2009 - The BCA Research Nanotechnology Lab opened.

  • December 2013 - The CSBL Cell Culture Annex opened.

  • March 2017 - Indrani Das awarded First Place in Regeneron STS competition
